Donald Trump looks into canceling GOP debate he’s set to host

With the wheels coming off the GOP debate he is supposed to host, Donald Trump admitted Friday that he’s looking into canceling the sparsely-attended forum.

But Trump, in a typical display of chutzpah, said there’s another reason why he might pull the plug – he still may run for President.

“If the Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate [to defeat President Obama\],” Trump declared, “I am unwilling to give up my right to run as an independent candidate.”

The Donald had blamed TV equal-time provisions that prohibited him from simultaneously running for President and hosting NBC’s “The Apprentice” until the show’s May season finale for bowing out of the race.

He also claimed that several GOP candidates told him they’d only do the December 27 debate if Trump vowed to not launch a late bid for the White House once “The Apprentice” was off the air.

Trump refused.

Mitt Romney has declined to attend the debate in which Donald Trump will be moderating…

Key Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Tuesday he will not take part in a debate moderated by real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trumplater this month.

Romney, who is battling a late surge by former House speaker Newt Gingrich, said Trump had wished him well after the former Massachusetts governor became the third candidate to announce they will skip the debate.

“I’m not participating,” he told Fox television, saying he already has two debates scheduled this month, and was campaigning hard to secure support in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.

“I spoke with Donald Trump earlier today and indicated that we just can’t make this debate and we focus on the other two. And, I will be campaigning,” he added.

Romney said Trump — who has indicated he could soon announce whom he endorses for the Republican nomination to take on Barack Obama in the November 2012 presidential election — respected his decision.

“He understood my perspective and wished me well,” he said.

He added: “I told him at this late date and with the other debates we have scheduled, and .. by the way, there are several other, five or ten other debate requests we have had for December and January — and we cannot do them all.

“We try to do a couple a month,” he said.

Trump, who briefly flirted with his own Republican presidential run earlier this year, will be moderating the December 27 debate just a week before the January 3 Iowa caucuses that officially kick off the 2012 voting season.

Two other minor candidates, Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul, have already said they do not plan to attend the debate in Des Moines, Iowa.

Chuck Schumer Gives Newt Gingrich A Medicare Death Hug from (TPMDC)

Democrats couldn’t be more thrilled to see the Republican party turn on Newt Gingrich. And they’re capitalizing on it, politically.

In a conference call with reporters Wednesday morning, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gave Gingrich a giant bear hug, saying he agreed with Gingrich’s critique of the House Republican plan to privatize Medicare and warning Republicans that rejecting Gingrich locks them into a politically disastrous position.

“Newt and I are considered political opposites,” Schumer said, “but I couldn’t agree more with what he said Sunday about the House Republican proposal to end Medicare…. In a straight shooting way he acknowledged that this is right-wing social engineering.”

I have blogged about this issue until I am almost blogged out..Well maybe not Trump is always great to blog about. is meeting with NBC executives today to discuss the future of “Celebrity Apprentice,”. This could go either way I think.
As I have said in earlier blogs I think it would be very interesting to see Trump run, he would bring some much needed flavor to the field of choices……Like him or not he is a very polarizing figure…

Trump’s Special Counsel Michael Cohen says NBC is eager to keep the top rated show on the air, but disputes reports that NBC could continue to produce the reality show, even without the big boss. Cohen says the reality is: NBC can’t make that decision because the network doesn’t own the show. He says Trump and the reality show’s creator, Mark Burnett, own it.

Trump is supposed to make an announcement regarding his run for the presidency during the season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice” which airs on NBC May 22. His office has said at the end of the show, he will announce a time and place for a future press conference where he would announce whether or not he is running for president. Cohen says as of now, he doesn’t know if that’s still the plan or if Trump will make any public announcement today.
