Governor Daniels held a ceremonial bill signing Saturday morning at the Statehouse for a key element of his education reform package.

Hours after the 2011 Legislative Session ended at the Statehouse, Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law his comprehensive education reform package.
The bill changes the way Hoosier teachers will be hired, evaluated and paid.

“I just do it with so much hope and so much excitement that we’ve embarked on a brand new era.,” said Governor Daniels.

Among some of the provisions: Teacher performance is now a factor in hiring, promotion, salary and dismissal. Students won’t be taught by teachers rated ineffective without parent approval.
With dozens of Hoosier teachers surrounding him, Daniels got emotional talking about the bill.

“We have learned over the years among all the things that we can do to make more successful the children of this state and the education years that they go through nothing comes close to a better teacher.” he said.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Doctor Tony Bennett attended the ceremony. Bennett explained how students would benefit the most.

“This General Assembly, this Governor has opened the door for Indiana to honor Indiana’s truly, inspiring and inspired teachers in no way like we’ve never done before,” said Bennett.

“2011 will be the session that people look back to and say Hoosiers got it right,” said House Speaker Brian Bosma

Indiana House Minority Leader Pat Bauer responded to the governor’s reform bill. Bauer said what has been accomplished through single-party control will soon effect Hoosiers.

“The real score card is going to come within the next year or so when you see many, many programs cut throughout this state,” said House Minority Leader Pat Bauer.

In the coming days, Governor Daniels will sign the remaining pieces of his education reform bill, including a bill that will expand charter schools.
