LAKELAND | A 20-year-old man is accused of nearly hitting a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officer with his truck Tuesday while leading officers on a chase in North Lakeland. Darrell Hamann Jr., of 2534 Burns St., in Lakeland, faces numerous charges including battery, burglary, felony fleeing, dealing in stolen property and attempted second-degree murder.

At about 2 p.m. Fish and Wildlife officers tried to serve a search and arrest warrant at Hamann’s home, according to the state. Officers had investigated him for two weeks and suspected him of dealing stolen boats and motors.

When officers arrived, Hamann drove away in his pick-up truck and almost struck a Fish and Wildlife officer, according to the state. That’s what resulted in the attempted second-degree murder charge.

Fish and Wildlife and Lakeland Police officers chased Hamann less than 5 miles away, where he hit a tree in the 3600 block of Lynn Drive, according to Lakeland Police. Hamann ran into nearby a home at 710 Hull St.

Hamann pushed two residents inside the home, Brian and Faline Gilliland, and tried to hide in their bathroom, police said. Officers arrested him inside.
