WINTER HAVEN | A homeless man has been arrested and charged with the killing of a resident of the Sail Wind apartments, the Winter Haven Police Department has announced.

David Matthew Young, 29, has been charged in the death of Martin Vasser, 54. Vasser was stabbed multiple times inside his apartment after the two men argued, police said. Police said Young confessed to stabbing Vasser.

Vasser was confined to a wheelchair, police said. Vasser had not been seen by neighbors for a few days. Residents contacted building maintenance to check on him, police said. About 7:15 p.m. Tuesday a maintenance employee entered the locked apartment and saw a large amount of blood at the doorway and immediately called police.

When police arrived, Vasser’s body was found. It appeared he had been dead for a few days, police said.

Detectives canvassed the apartment complex and developed information that Young had regularly visited Vasser’s apartment. Detectives also learned Young had been seen with a bottle of Hydrocodone that had been prescribed to the victim, police said.

Witnesses told detectives Young was homeless and directed officers to Young’s “camp” in the area of 24th St. Northwest and Recker Highway in Winter Haven. Young was located and after questioning, confessed to killing Vasser on April 13, police said. He also confessed to stealing $12 from the victim and taking the prescription drugs and attempting to sell them to Vasser’s neighbors, police said.

Young was booked in the Polk County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and prohibited possession of prescription Hydrocodone.
