Crystal Lake Student Charged After Claiming Gun on Campus

LAKELAND | Polk County Sheriff’s investigators have taken into custody a student who was placing calls to 911 saying there was a gun on campus at Crystal Lake Middle School, according to school district officials.

For the second day in a row, Crystal Lake Middle School had to be placed on lockdown today after the phone call. Sheriff’s deputies followed up on the call and searched the campus Wednesday and today.

The 14-year-old student, who officials are not identifying, was charged with misuse of 911 and resisting arrest without violence, both misdemeanors.

“It was the same kid who made the phone calls yesterday and today,” said Greg Bondurant, the school district’s director of safe schools. “The school system is tired of it, the students are tired of it and the parents are tired of it.”

Bondurant said it was a relief when he was notified on his cell phone shortly before 1 p.m. that the student had been caught.

“That’s my biggest fear is one of our kids being shot,” Bondurant said. “I don’t like days like today.”

Earlier in the school year, multiple bomb threats were made at Lakeland High School. Each time the call was made, the person said he was going to blow up Lakeland High, Bondurant has previously said. Lakeland police have not made an arrest, according to Sgt. Terri Smith, LPD spokeswoman.

Students who are caught making bomb threats are recommended for expulsion based on the code of conduct. A $2,500 reward was offered in that case.
